"The Dead of Night" is the second book of the Tomorrow Series.Book two breaks away from any comparisons to other military invasions novels that involve young adults. This is because the narrative and the characters experience further development, which includes Ellie having a significant personal experience despite the carnage of war.The story has a smooth follow on from book one, and questions the reader may be left wondering after the first book do receive attention, such as the fate of Corrie and Kevin, who are addressed immediately. The group faces multiple skirmishes with the enemy and further personal loss. Yet their survival skills and ability to operate as a successful unit continues to enhance. The desire to read each book of the series is additionally stimulated by this stage of the story, as the destiny of the characters and Australia can only be quenched by reading on.Nicholas R.W. Henning - Australian Author
I found Dead of Night to be a great sequel to Tomorrow, When the War Began (The Tomorrow Series #1) because there seemed to be a lot more action going on. I felt like the interactions between the kids were much more realistic and enjoyed hearing more from Ellie's perspective.I did find it annoying that the synopsis on the back of the book has almost nothing to do with the central plot of the book. It just doesn't make sense to plug a rescue mission when that part only takes up one chapter at most.Great read aside though, I was LIVID when I found out that books 3 & 4 are not available for purchase anywhere online. Only one library in Honolulu has the third and it's pretty out of the way. I cannot believe Scholastic doesn't have two books in the series in print, but it has books 5 and on available. Don't get sucked in unless you know how to get books 3 and 4.
I loved this book. Some say that the series should only have three books and that this one was not as good as the others. If Marsden had stopped after three, he would have deprived readers of a fabulous story. The ending to the last book was absolutely heartbreaking and devastating, but Marsden did a great job in paying homage to the lost character and lightening the mood so we weren't depressed about the ending of the last book while we were trying to enjoy this book. A compelling read, with intricate character development and a great storyline. I'm off to buy the next one!!!
The movie is a little better than the books. The problem is that these young men and women just had their home invaded and they labor over taking up arms and fighting them. They are so P.C. that they worry whether or not they should shoot them, and whether or not it was their countries fault for the invasion. (The idea being that they didn't treat their neighbors good enough and had it too good themselves.) The action however, is good and the interaction between characters is rewarding. So put the foolish P.C. stuff aside and it is enjoyable.
I enjoyed this book actually more than the first. The complexity of emotions and character development elevated this a bit above the naive "young adult" feel of the first book. My only complaint is that the plot (particularly the end) was rather formulaic and predictable. I hope I'm not in for 5 more repeats of this same story arc. Having each book essentially end the same way gets tiresome. Still... solid series, and I'm looking forward to book 3.
I read the first of these books in High School. I related to them then for a different reason. John Marsden is an amazing author. The realism of the books and the emotional side effects of the demonstrated actions is often left out. I will buy the whole series.
This book was a great sequel to Tomorrow When The War Began. If there is a negative it is that once you start reading this series, you become hooked on finding out what happens and there are five more books after this before you know if Ellie and her friends succeed in helping to earn freedom for their land again.
A continuation of the series in much the same vain: action-packed, dystopian, teenage-angst set in Australia. It really keeps you reading and is fun. Unfortunately the sex isn't brilliantly written and the proofreading in the kindle edition is quite shocking, but overall a good young adult series so far.
