Trauma and the Soul

In Trauma and the Soul, Donald Kalsched continues the exploration he began in his first book, The Inner World of Trauma (1996)―this time going further into the mystical or spiritual moments that often occur around the intimacies of psychoanalytic work. Through extended clinical vignettes, including therapeutic dialogue and dreams, he shows how depth psychotherapy with trauma’s survivors can open both analytic partners to "another world" of non-ordinary reality in which daimonic powers reside, both light and dark. This mytho-poetic world, he suggests, is not simply a defensive product of our struggle with the harsh realities of living as Freud suggested, but is an everlasting fact of human experience―a mystery that is often at the very center of the healing process, and yet at other times, strangely resists it. With these "two worlds" in focus, Kalsched explores a variety of themes as he builds, chapter by chapter, an integrated psycho-spiritual approach to trauma and its treatment including: images of the lost soul-child in dreams and how this "child" represents an essential core of aliveness that is both protected and persecuted by the psyche’s defenses; Dante’s guided descent into the Inferno of Hell as a paradigm for the psychotherapy process and its inevitable struggle with self-destructive energies; childhood innocence and its central role in a person’s spiritual life seen through the story of St. Exupéry’s The Little Prince; how clinical attention to implicit processes in the relational field, as well as discoveries in body-based affective neuroscience are making trauma treatment more effective; the life of C.G. Jung as it portrays his early trauma, his soul’s retreat into an inner sanctuary, and his gradual recovery of wholeness through the integration of his divided self. This is a book that restores the mystery to psychoanalytic work. It tells stories of ordinary patients and ordinary psychotherapists who, through working together, glimpse the reality of the human soul and the depth of the spirit, and are changed by the experience. Trauma and the Soul will be of particular interest to practicing psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, analytical psychologists, and expressive arts therapists, including those with a "spiritual" orientation. Donald Kalsched is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and a training analyst with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. He is the author of numerous articles in analytical psychology, and lectures widely on the subject of early trauma and its treatment. His books include The Inner World of Trauma (1996).

We are so fortunate to have someone willing to write about the deepest aspects of the psyche and to what depths it will go to attempt to heal itself. Donald Kalsched truly understands these deep spiritual pockets of the unconscious and to what lengths the unconscious will struggle to avoid the grips of terrified "otherness". I am happy to know that Kalsched now believes that the Protector/Persecutor is now educable and that trauma is not always committed to the grips of anti-relatedness. Kalsched goes to great lengths to explain to the reader in theory, fairytale, and psychoanalytic work how the psychic wounds that occur very early in life can actually heal themselves through the "integrative energies" of the of unconscious. This book combines both Jungian depth psychotherapy and the sacred spiritualness of the traumatized soul. This book embraces Dante's guided descent into the inferno, the role of the clinician as guide and container, Jungian theory and the integration of the dismembered soul that is able to reach wholeness on the other side.

It not only actually validates spiritual experiences but, rather than make it out to be a fake creation of the mind in order to escape horrors or abuse experienced in life, it is as if the trauma or traumatic experiences and splitting of the psyche are akin to what a shaman goes through!Rather, such experiences *open up* the Spirit world in dramatic ways, opens you to the REALITY of it existing right alongside physical reality! One foot in both worlds, or one eye closed to look inward and the other open into this world as he describes it.Many of his patients have psychic gifts, shamanic experiences, etc, and especially connect to this Other realm through their DREAMS!So rather than doubt things of the Spirit being made up fantasy as an escape, it actually builds on the roots from a Jungian perspective that the supernatural is quite real and those who have experienced trauma are opened to it in unique ways.Great if you need a bit of support, plus it is a great help in understanding the mind blowing ways in which your psyche operates, much of it below the level of conscious awareness.I highly recommend it!

I loved his first book, The Inner World of Trauma. This one is more poetically written, using case material and examples to demonstrate the way working with a trauma survivor, or being a trauma survivor, can evoke the sacred. Even though I am in the field, I get bored with reading a lot of theoretical psychology texts. Kalsched is such an exceptional writer and comes at this topic in a way that is riveting.

Donald Kalsched's books The Inner Word of Trauma, and this on Trauma and the Soul are must-read books on understanding and working with trauma. THey are to be read slowly and carefully digested because they are transformative. I study them myself, and read them to my patients who also find great benefit in them. I strongly recommend this book to any clinician who deals with trauma, as well as to those who have suffered trauma to help them better understand trauma. Donald Kalsched is himself a profoundly spiritual man - having met him personally, he is the only person I have met who has no sense of ego about him. He is just present in a profound way. Those qualities are present in his books also - where he seamlessly integrates a wide range of thinkers and viewpoints with no sense of tension or bias in any direction - just presenting each clearly for what they had to say, and offering very lucid integration.

Intelligent, insightful read into the psycho-spirtuality of trauma and how it affects the soul. Dr. Kalshed gives a practical look into clinical studies of trauma patients and how these can open doors to the Jungian other world of spiritual dimension. A caring person who is healing trauma victims.
